![]() Welcome to the "Róka tanya" Ethno Center and Birding Lodge, run by Association ETNO-LIFE and ECONET private tourist company. We provide lodging and quality meals and organize different programs like guided photo tours, Natural history Workshops, birding trips, etc. The Róka tanya - "Fox Rach" - is situated on the east shore of the Ludas lake, 12 kilometers away from downtown Subotica. It has a hundred years old tradition. In olden days it operated as a boathouse, here the boatman lived, who carried local villagers across the lake to the church, to the market or to the school. ![]() The building was renovated, i. e. reconstructed to its original state in 1992, thus was it saved from destruction. At the moment, it is the only homestead in the area that maintained its original condition, that is, it kept the architectural characteristics of the pounded-walled, three-part Pannonian house. Even today its old ovens and stoves that are heated underneath the so called free-chimney are fully functional, together with their traditional accessories. In the same time with the renovation we started collecting ethnographical objects in the region. At present we have a collection of about 300 different valuables stored between the whitewashed walls of the house. Róka tanya has a potential status of listed monument, and is recognized as of importance for the history of civilisation and culture by the National Institute for Protection of Monuments. In 1993 by two families a catering industry and turistical company was founded, by the name "Econet", that is running the Róka tanya for the time being. We consider our main goals the care of tradition, the environmental education and the development of village-tourism. It is now for seven years that we organize school-child excursions during the scool year, and summer camps during the school outs. We introduce the kids and young people to the virtues and customs of the peasant life, teach them the villagers traditional beliefs, their folklore, their objects of use and tools. To the visitors we present the material, cultural, and ethnic values of the Ludas region. On the Róka tanya that is preserved in its original state there is no electricity. We own a small-capacity summertime shower and two camp-toilets. In the recent years we had visitors in increasing numbers here, but our hygienic conditions were not very satisfying. For the future continous function of the facility it is essential that we provide basic grooming conditions, and to develop hyginic terms of highest quality. During the restoration of Róka tanya, with the kind help of the Illyés Public Foundation, in 1997 it was possible to restore the thatch. The rest of the infratstuctural development and the running of the facility itself was conducted with self efforts. ![]() View of the lake from the Lodge. |
